How to edit an MP3 or other sound file
- Choose your file
Tap "Choose file" or drag it onto the page. MP3, WAV, M4A, OGG, FLAC and even a video's sound all work.
- Drag on the waveform to pick a part
Drag the two handles (or type exact times) to select what you want to change, then press a button like "Keep only this part" or "Fade in". Press Play to listen first.
- Download it
Choose MP3, WAV, M4A or another format on the right, then press "Download". You can keep editing and download again as many times as you like.
Questions
How do I cut the start of a song?
Drag on the waveform from the very beginning to the moment you want the song to start (or type the times into the "Start" and "End" boxes), then press "Delete this part". Or select just the part you want to keep and press "Keep only this part".
How do I make a ringtone for my iPhone?
Press "Make a ringtone…", pick how many seconds you want (up to 40, which is what the iPhone allows) and whether to add a short fade out, then download it as M4R. Add it to your phone through the Finder or iTunes "Sound" sync, the same way as any other ringtone file.
How do I join two songs together?
Open "More options" → "Join & mix", add the other file (or files), set a crossfade if you want the songs to blend into each other instead of cutting sharply, then press "Join now".
Can I make my recording louder?
Yes. Use the "Volume" button for a quick boost, or open "More options" → "Effects" → "Normalise" to automatically bring quiet recordings up to a sensible, consistent loudness without the loud parts clipping.
Can I remove background noise?
Yes, to a good extent. Select a part that has just the background noise and no voice or music, press "Learn noise from selection" under "Clean up", then apply it. It works best on steady hiss, hum or fan noise — it won't remove a one-off bang or a dog barking.
Will cutting or editing lower the quality?
Hardly. Saving as MP3, M4A or OGG compresses the sound again, but at the "High" (192 kbps) or "Best" (320 kbps) quality the difference is very hard to hear. If you want no loss at all, save as WAV or FLAC.
Can I undo a change?
Yes. Press "Undo" (or Ctrl+Z) as many times as you like, and "Redo" to bring a change back. The "History" tab under "More options" lists every change so you can jump straight back to an earlier point.
Does this work with videos?
Yes — choose an MP4, MOV or other video file and Eden Tools will open just its sound for you to edit, the same as any audio file.
What's the difference between the export formats?
MP3 plays almost everywhere and is the usual choice. M4A (AAC) is what iPhones and Apple software prefer. WAV and FLAC keep the sound exactly as it is, with FLAC making a smaller file than WAV. OGG (Opus) gives very good quality at a small size. M4R is for iPhone ringtones specifically.
