Password Generator

Make strong random passwords, easy-to-type passphrases or PIN codes — made on your device, never sent anywhere.

How to make a strong password

  1. Pick a kind

A random password for most accounts, a passphrase for ones you type often, or a PIN.

  2. Set the length

16 characters with all four kinds is very strong. Longer is always stronger.

  3. Copy it

Press Copy and save it in your password manager. A new one is made every time you change an option.

Questions

Is it really free, with no sign-up?

Yes, completely. There's no sign-up, no login and no daily limit: just open the page and start. It works in your browser on any computer, phone or tablet with nothing to install, and your notes are saved on your own device, never uploaded.

Is this password generator safe?

Yes. Passwords are made in your browser with its cryptographic random number generator and are never sent or stored anywhere — you can even use it offline.

How long should a password be?

At least 12 characters; 16 or more is better. A 16-character password with capitals, small letters, numbers and symbols would take longer than the age of the universe to guess.

What is a passphrase?

A few random words, like Acorn-Pulse-Fable-Dizzy-Rover7. Five or six random words are very strong and much easier to type and remember. The words come from the EFF's short word list (CC BY 3.0).

What are look-alike characters?

Characters that are easy to mix up when reading or typing, like a capital I, a small l and the number 1, or the letter O and zero. Leave them out if you'll need to type the password by hand.
